Official name: Republic of Azerbaijan (Azərbaycan Respublikası).

Area: 86,600 km2

Capital: Baku (approx. 3.5 million inhabitants).

The official language is Azerbaijani (a Turkic language), which has adopted the Latin script in 1992.

Government: Republic presidential democracy with unicameral parliament.

Head of state: President Ilham Aliyev was elected on 15th October 2003 for 5 years and re-elected in 2008.

Parliament: Milli Majlis (National Assembly), on the 7th November 2010 unicameral parliament was elected for 5 years with 125 seats; electoral system.

Membership in international organizations: UN, Euro Europe, OSCE, IMF, World Bank, ODWE-GUAM Organization of the Islamic Conference, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Black Sea Cooperation Council, ECO (Central and West Asian Organization for Economic cooperation), CIS, euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC), Partnership for Peace (PfP), the European Neighborhood Policy.

Currency: New Azerbaijani Manat (AZN).

Industry: Oil processing, machinery, chemical industry, textile industry, food industry, metallurgical industry, aluminum industry.

Agriculture: Agriculture is the second largest industry. Cotton, wine, sericulture, fruit and grain farming, vegetables, fruits, rice, tea, tobacco, sheep and cattle breeding complete the agricultural production. With the land reform and the privatization program, almost all farms and agricultural land went into private hands.

Natural resources: petroleum, natural gas, iron, gold, zinc, copper, molybdenum, marble.
